The Fulfilled Family

Text:  Psalm 128:1-6

Memory Verse: Psalm 127:1- Except the Lord builds a house they labour in vain who build it; except the Lord keeps the city; the watchman wakes but in vain.

It is God’s plan that we all have fulfiled families. The purpose of God is for every member of the family to function effectively so that the whole family is kept together in the way He originally planned. What is a fulfilled famiily? How can we have a fulfilled family? What do we do when things go wrong? These are some of the questions we will consider in this study.

What does the word “fulfilled” mean?

The word fulfilled means feeling happy because you are getting everything that you want out of life. It is a sense of happiness because of fully developing one’s abilities or character.

Every member of the family has a role to play to make the family work.

How about the word Family?

A basic social unit consisting of parents, chlldren, considered as a group whether dwelling together or not: the traditional family. A social unit consisiting of one or more adults together with the children they care for e.g. a single parent family.

  1. What is  a fulfilled family?

A fulfilled family is one where every member of the family does their role as God has ordained it to be. It is a family where the Bible is the final authority for all. The Bible gives clear instructions to every member of the family which when followed produces happiness and joy for all.

It is important that every part of the family carry out their role so that the family can fulfill the purpose and plan of God the way he ordained it. Regardless of the structure of the family - traditional or single parent - the plan of God is for everyone to have a family that reflects His love, where everyone is truly loved and appreciated.

  1. How can we have a fulfilled family?

The most important thing to note is that the purpose of God is for every family to be fulfilled. To have a fulfilled family therefore, every member must be committed to carrying out their role as clearly stated by God in His word.

The instruction to Fathers is

  • To love God - Deut 6: 5- 9; Joshua 24:15
  • To love their wives as Christ loved the church; as they love their own bodies- Eph 5:25-29
  • To love your children- and not to provoke them- Eph 6:4
  • To teach the family to keep the way of the Lord- Gen 18:19
  • To provide for the family- 1st Tim 5:8

To wives, the Lord says

  • To love God- Deut 6:5-9; Joshua 24:15
  • Submit to your own husband- Eph 5:24
  • Respect your husband- Eph 5:33b

And to children

  • To love God- Joshua 24:15
  • Obey your parents and honour them- Eph 6:1-2

All members

  • Add value to the family
  • Communicate with each other
  • Develop family values
  • Celebrate each other
  • Plan to develop your family
    • Have a Vision
    • Set goals to accomplish the Vision
    • Discover & Nurture your family’s Talents & Gifts
    • Expand your Horizon
    • Support one another

When everyone focuses on carrying out their role, the entire family enjoys the benefit and the blessings of God and everyone is happy.

  1. What happens when any part of the family refuses to do their role?

The whole family suffers. The vaccum needs to be filed so that the family can fully experience the joy and blessing that God ordained. What can we do in such an instance?

  • Pray- To God to bring a change to the situation. Psalm 55:22- “Cast your burden on the Lord(releasing the weight of it) and He wil sustain you; He will never allow the (consistently) righteous to be moved(made to slip, fall, or fail)”(AMP); 1st Peter 5:7
  • Effective communication- Eph 4:29- “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so tha your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them”; Prov 15:1
  • Love- John 13:34- “I give you a new commandment that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another”. 1st Corinthians 13:7
  • Be honest- Col 3:9- Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds
  • Trust- Prov 18:24- “There are friends who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother”; Prov 13:20
  • Respect- Ist Peter 2:17- “Respect everyone and love the family of believers. Fear God and respect the King”.

Discuss what lessons you have learnt; how we can make our families vibrant, our relationships effective and everyone of us fully enjoying the benefits of His love and blessings.
